Buyer Representation

Until recently most real estate agents on Long Island represented the seller, not the buyer - even the ones who drove you from house to house for days on end. By law, such an agent was required to work on behalf of the seller – to get the highest price and the best terms for the seller.

Today, more and more agents are offering to represent the buyer. From the initial selection of properties all the way through contract negotiations and settlement, you can have an agent specifically committed to representing your best interests when buying a home.

The benefits of having representation in a real estate transaction are significant. Your agent is your advocate, owing loyalty and confidentiality to you. In short, your agent’s goal is to work on your behalf to help you find the best possible home that meets your needs and wants at terms that are favorable to you.

The nation’s oldest and largest association of real estate practitioners addressing all aspects of consumer representation, the Real Estate Buyer’s Agent Council, has established a criterion for excellence in buyer representation… the “Accredited Buyer Representative” designation.

To obtain this designation, a real estate professional must complete an extensive classroom training program on buyer agency practices and procedures, pass a written examination and submit evidence of practical experience as a buyer’s representative.

So, if there is a real estate transaction in your future, look for the real estate professional who displays the letters “ABR” after his/her name.
